A few days ago, I decided the time to make more soap had come. And so I made a beautiful soap with the most expensive of oils. )

But this is not a tale with a happy ending. As is so often the case, the soap turned out to be gorgeous, but ill-mannered; it thumbed it's nose at me, sneered evilly, and separated.

Argh.

Usually I start again from scratch at this point. But because I used very expensive oils, and because I made a very large batch in my hubris, I melted the soap down instead. There was much cursing and despair, but I did manage to save it - though it is now so soft it will probably take months to dry to the point where it won't melt away at the first touch of water.

But alas, the soap has changed.  )

...

Yeah.

From now on, this is my personal canon - it makes about a hundred times more sense. Plus, this epilogue rocks.

So. Much. Better.

Here's a new edition of an old meme favorite of mine!

The rules:
All characters depicted in my icons are listed and paired off in alphabetical order. This time I have decided to sort the characters by last name, or throne name in one instance.

James Kirk / Kiryuu Touga
This is definitely a one-night-stand, with neither party interested in an actual relationship of any kind.  )

Alex Krycek / Leonard McCoy
Somewhat bizarre, but not impossible. :-) )

Menkheperre (Thutmose) / Fox Mulder
This pairing is clearly the result of magical sex pollen being inadvertently released from an ancient relic. )

Nishikido Ryo / Oilien
Ryo, Ryo, you really shouldn't spend so much time hanging out in dubious restrooms…  )

Saionji Kyoichi / Sakurazuka Seishirou
Despite my initial reaction when I saw this pairing, I now think this works, in a weird way.  )

Sha Gojyo / Spock
ROFL! Oh, this would be such fun.  )

Taguchi Junnosuke / Nyota Uhura
Awww. Cute! These two are just adorable together (and also highly decorative). )

Dean Winchester / Yellow Ranger
My favorite crack pairing of the bunch )

Sessions of Parliament are certainly far more lively in South Korea than they are around here...

I love the way they throw themselves bodily into the fray. Also, note the walking sticks used as instruments of crowd control, ear grabbing, and attempts to beat opponents into submission with a phone receiver.

Other countries apparently have very lively parliament sessions, too, but I prefer the somewhat melodramatic South Korean way to the full-on "street warfare" Indian parliament fight, the Ukrainian egg missiles and smoke bombs, and even the (comparatively sedate) Czech one-on-one bitch-slapping fest.

I am so tired of being told over and over again that this-or-that character is a "genius". Guess what, dear book, movie and TV authors? If you really want me to think of a certain character as really, really smart, chances are You Are Doing It Wrong.

Why? Let me give you some pointers.

What doesn't work )

What would work )

Doesn't seem that hard, does it?

Sadly enough, though, most writers seem to prefer to stick to the easier, if ineffective "tell, don't show"-method. This is especially grating because often, the character as actually shown is thick as a plank.

Fortunately, there's an effective easy fix for writers who are unable to show their character behaving in ways that will make them look like a genius.

The easy fix for problematically unintelligent fictional geniuses )

So, what do you think? Know anyannoyingly dumb geniuses? Know any characters that are plausibly written geniuses? Tell me! :-)

There's a larger version of the pic at my new "Art & Story Banners" page, where I've also put up the alternate story banners Rin/[info]xxgardenxx made for "Learning How to Lose". So pretty!

* If you have no idea who these guys are, they're a samurai and a swordsmith, and can be found in Chapter 6 of my novel about sparkly dancing boys. *g*

Shit My Students Write

Excerpts from students' essays that will give you a whole new perspective on life, literature, history, and all that shit. (I paraphrase.) Some of my favorites:

Mugging angst
At some point in a person’s life, they are a teenager, and every teenager is sure to hold a mug of angst close at hand.

Took the words right out of that book.
Its not really plagiarism as it was exactly what I was going to write anyway.
More bonmots under the cut! )

Damn You, Autocorrect!

Which has taught me that no matter what, you should never ever text any older relatives or business acquaintances on an iPhone. OTOH, frat buddies and other parties who accept "syphilis!" as a cheery all-purpose greeting are probably okay.

This one isn't one of the really funny ones, but it reminds me of a pair of sparkly dancing boys, so... )

You guys.

Check it out:

http://by-the-pen.net/

It's my new home on the web. :-))) Yay!!

If you could have a look and let me know about any problems, weirdness, broken links, general or specific ugliness... I'd be very grateful for info on anything that doesn't work, and for general feedback, too! I am really not a natural when it comes to design, so seriously, feel free to suggest improvements...

Oh, what I've already discovered: The "Last Updated" script isn't working, and I lack the willpower to investigate the why and wherefores. I think I'll just delete the thing, and either have no "updated" note at all or change it manually every time.

After tidying everything up, adding all the stuff I'd previously forgotten, and generally cleaning house, I have to say: Wow, I didn't realize I'd written so many fanfic stories.

Have a look at the Parallels fic exchange over at [info]parallelsfic! It's a "secret santa" rare fandom deal for Asian sources, including RPF, manga, anime, drama…

The minimum length of the stories is a mere 500 words, the deadlines are reassuringly generous, and you can nominate your favorite fandoms until May 25th. Go forth and nominate!

Also... does anyone know a web designer who'd like to help japan? And/or me? Pretty please?

The irony is that I work with a bunch of web designers. I just don't want to ask them to pretty up the design of my slash archive web page. Go figure. ;-)

Total brilliance: a trailer for a Star Trek TNG porn movie. Which has a real plot that seems fascinating, and no actual sex in the trailer. It *does* have excellent costumes, actors who actually look a lot like the ST:TNG actors, and a lot of attention to detail that can only mean everyone involved is a fan.

It's like a movie based on explicit fanfiction.

I've heard there are also porn movies set in the X-Files and Batman universes, and maybe others... I wonder if any are slash?

Which would YOU choose?

I originally wanted to make this a poll, but with this many icons... Oh, and none of these icons were made by me, btw; I did come by them honestly, though. ;-)

As most of you already know, I'm at faviconSylvia on the AO3 fanfiction archive. Fandoms in the immediate queue include JE* and XF**.

* the Junno/Ryo epic, of which there now remain only 70 pages to edit!
** my only older slash stories I haven't yet uploaded to AO3; they're all still available at my website, though.

AO3 now lets you subscribe to authors and notifies you when they update. In my case, though, the stories will be up on LJ first, and hopefully on my website, too.

I have GOT to get the last design details of my new website straightened out. Why am I not a web designer?
